Postponed elections due to COVID-19

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak many countries have had to make drastic changes, including to their planned elections. Due to restrictions on mass gatherings and self-isolation requirements, many elections have been postponed. Every election planned for March 2020 and the following weeks has been postponed indefinitely.

EPDE member Civil Network OPORA created this infographic based on information from The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), which is analyzing countries’ response to the pandemic in relation to their planned elections.

This information is accurate as of March 25 2020.

In the Eastern neighborhood region this affects Armenia and Russia, which have both had to postpone their constitutional referendums.

In the case of Russia, election experts have questioned the legitimacy of this vote, stating that legally it cannot be seen as a referendum as the way in which it has been called has not been in line with legal provisions regulating the holding of a referendum.
